Every building or structure that is built in or on the earth imposes loads on the soil supporting the foundations. The stresses set up in the soil causes deformation of the soil with stress failure being caused by slippage of soil particles, which may lead to sliding of one body of soil relative to the surrounding mass.

Shear Box Assemblies

Open the Shear Box Assemblies page

All ELE Shear Box Assemblies are designed to fit into the carriage of the EL26-2114 series Direct/Residual Shear Machines. They are supplied complete with two porous stones, one retaining stone and a loading pad. The four sizes offered comply with the relevant ASTM, AASHTO and BS standards.

All assemblies can be used for quick shear tests or drained/residual shear test applications.

• Microprocessor controlled drive system.
• Large on-board LCD screen display.
• Direct entry of shear speeds via touch sensitive keypad.
• Rapid approach and return to start datum.
• Fully variable speed control from 0.000001” (0.00001 mm) to 0.399999” (9.99999 mm) per minute.

The ELE Direct/Residual Shear Apparatus uses a microprocessor controlled, menu-driven drive system with keyboard entry for precise shear speed setting and control. The use of a microprocessor controlled drive system and keyboard entry provides the unit with a wide range of features which include pause and speed reset during testing, RS232C interface for computer control, operator programming of speed and control functions, self-test diagnostics and many other features. A return to start datum provides a positive means of reversing the shear box when either preparing for a new test or continuing with residual testing procedures. Safety forward/reverse travel limit switches are incorporated into the system as standard and are monitored through the electronics.

The electronics are housed in a modern styled shroud, which is adjustable for optimum viewing. The apparatus is enclosed in a durably constructed case and has been designed for bench mounting. The apparatus is supplied complete with carriage, loading weight hanger and 10:1 lever ratio loading device.

Shear Box, indicators/transducers, proving ring or loading weights are needed for test; not included, order separately.

• Determines shear strength of cohesive soils in the laboratory or in the field.
• Lightweight, rust resistant construction.
• Includes three interchangeable vanes.

The Torvane Shear Device enables the operator to rapidly determine the shear strengths of cohesive soils, in the laboratory or in the field.

The Torvane is simple to use and needs no extensive specimen preparation. All that is required is a flat sample area of at least 2” (50 mm) in diameter.
